Both in the awful 70s theatre in Auckland, too hot and very uncomfortable seats, even for my warm well padded (I'm told) behind. Both were in fantastic forms, very distinct voices, and 35 years apart. Oh, I'm making it sound like they sang together! No no no, just happened to be here the same week.
Dionne wins no question, except she must get bored singing even these wonderful classics? The odd thing was, the crowd were unusually enthusiastic, for their age (me being 50 younger than the average for the night.. haha), and yet she finished her set (with the NZ symphony orchestra) and leaves the stage, as one would, for a quick fag or sip before the encore, but then the pianist gets up, shuffles her music, rummages in the handbag, collects her specs and rucksack and moves downstage and off with too much determination; as if her whole being was saying "I'm outta here!!", and she was, and that was that.
